TRANSPORTATION MODES MUST BE INTEGRATED

TRANSPORTATION MODES ARE SO WIDELY SEPARATED, PHYSICALLY, THAT THE RESULT IS INCRESING CHAOS. THE ANSWER, ACCORDING TO FAA ADMINISTRATOR JOHN H. SHAFFER, IS INTEGRATED TRANSPORTATION HUBS WITH EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF. THIS IDEA IS VISUALIZED IN AN ARCHITECT'S DRAWING FOR AN INTEGRATED TRANSPORTATION CENTER FOR NEW YORK CITY'S WEST SIDE WHICH WOULD SPEED SERVICE BY ELIMINATING THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION CAUSED BY BUS, TRUCK AND PASSENGER CAR MOVEMENTS IN PRESENT WIDELY-SEPARATED FACILITIES, AND BY REDUCING MANUAL HANDLING OF FREIGHT. HALF A MILE LONG, THE CENTER WOULD FEATURE ROOFTOP STOLPORT; HELIPORT AT WATER LEVEL, ALONG WITH HYDROFOIL FACILITY; RAILROAD TUNNEL UNDER HUDSON RIVER; VEHICULAR AND RAPID TRANSIT TUNNEL; AND BERTHING FOR RAPIDLY DIMINSIHING OCEANBORNE SHIPPING. /AUTHOR/
