THE ENGINEER AND THE CITY

THIS SYMPOSIUM PRESENTS DISCUSSIONS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE INTERDISCIPLINARY COOPERATION IN URBAN AFFAIRS. IT CONTAINS ANALYSES OF URBAN POLICY ON THE NATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL LEVELS AND OUTLINES THE ROLES OF INDUSTRY, LABOR AND GOVERNMENT IN CITY PROBLEMS. CASE HISTORIES OF SUCCESSFUL ENGINEERING EFFORTS IN THE CITY ARE DETAILED, INCLUDING EXAMPLES OF POSITIVE ACTION IN TRANSPORTATION, HOUSING, AND WATER POLLUTION CONTROL. THE REORDERING OF NATIONAL PRIORITIES TO CONFRONT URBAN PROBLEMS IS DISCUSSED FROM A VARIETY OF VIEWPOINTS.
