FUTURE DIRECTIONS FOR RESEARCH IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION

A PANEL SPONSORED BY OECD IN NOVEMBER 1967, WITH 14 PAPERS BY INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS IN A VARIETY OF DISCIPLINES IS REPORTED: ENGINEERING, ECONOMICS, URBAN PLANNING, ARCHITECTURE, AND CITY ADMINISTRATION. THE PANEL PLACED EMPHASIS ON THE FOLLOWING: IN ALL FIELDS OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH, MORE ATTENTION SHOULD BE PAID TO HUMAN FACTORS, PARTICULARLY TO THE NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS OF PRESENT AND POTENTIAL TRAVELLERS; MORE ATTENTION SHOULD BE PAID IN TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH TO THE ANALYSIS OF TOTAL EFFECTS OF TRANSPORTATION; AND GREATER EMPHASIS SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES TO PREDICT SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF TRANSPORT PROPOSALS AND DECISIONS, THEREBY REDUCING THE UNCERTAINTY INHERENT IN SUCH DECISIONS. SUCH SUBJECTS ARE COVERED AS NEW TECHNOLOGY IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION, COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH PROGRAMMING, THE ARCHITECT AND URBAN TRANSPORTATION, AND PLANNING FOR URBAN TRANSPORTATION'S FUTURE. /AUTHOR/
