Plying Dangerous Waters

The creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) brought together a number of disparate agencies, including the United States Coast Guard, though it was not immediately clear where the Coast Guard fit in the responsibilities of the new department. The Coast Guard works with the DHS to mitigate risk and improve security in ports and U.S. waters. Managing border security is a major challenge. It is necessary to monitor the physical coastline as well as waters. There is a huge volume of cargo and recreational vessels. U.S. ports and waterways handle over two billion tons of cargo each year. The Coast Guard and the DHS work together to manage border security effectively.
