Emerging figures: infrastructure and urban form in the construction of the unique European space

The upcoming EU27 Scenario will reveal, in the next future, a unique hyper-connected territory, structured by hub and spoke infrastructural systems. This new artificial geography, based on the increasing mobility of goods and people, is already radically changing major cities’ traits by way of large scale interventions for the renewal of infrastructural areas. They embody new forms of intersection within the city that no longer belong to the past. Faraway from its original and autonomous figurativeness, infrastructure today is flooding the urban body, redrawing its underground, internal limits and boundaries. This paper aims to describe, according to an architectural point of view, the contemporary spatial configurations of mobility infrastructures in order to understand meanings, to develop potentials and to propose new visions that can improve an integrated infrastructural design process.
