Operation and safety of tramways in interaction with public spaces: COST Action TU1103

Light Rail Transit (LRT) is used in many countries all over the world, particularly in Europe. Some networks have a very long experience and others are (re)discovering LRTs, with high inconsistencies in terms of institutional and economical contexts, safety management, operational monitoring and technical solutions. The European COST Action “Operation and safety of tramways in interaction with public space”, aims at a better understanding of LRT’s safety and at reducing the number and the gravity of accidents between LRT and public space users through a better insertion in urban spaces. The first Work Phase concerns the state of the art context exploration on: tramways’ institutional and regulatory aspects, data collection on accidents and finally, infrastructure design. WP1’s outcomes will be presented and a Second and Third Work Phases will follow, focusing on comparisons and analysis, then prospects and recommendation. This Project is funded by European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST).
