Novel modular system for animal transport

Nowadays, group transport of slaughter pigs takes place mainly in very costly, multi-tiered vehicles which are specially built for this purpose. In the European FP7 project TRANSUS: A novel Transport System for Slaughter Pigs, a new transport system based on the use of stackable containers was designed taking into account both road transport and animal welfare requirements. In order to assess the mechanical behaviour of the proposed container and validate the system, different tests under static loads due to road transport were defined. Simulations on a Finite Element Model were followed by laboratory tests on a prototype container. Regarding the dynamic behaviour, both experimental and numerical modal analyses were performed. In this paper, the basics of this new transport solution and the results from the mechanical tests are presented.
