THE ROLE OF OPERATIONAL RESEARCH IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

METHODS OF OPERATIONAL RESEARCH, STATISTICAL ANALYSIS, AND ECONOMIC CALCULATION OR ECONOMETRICS USED TO CONDUCT 502 SURVEYS ON OPERATIONAL RESEARCH IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT WERE ANALYZED. A BRIEF MENTION IS MADE OF SOME OF THE TRENDS THAT EMERGED FROM CERTAIN SURVEYS MADE BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT UNDERTAKINGS. AN ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED OF THE QUESTIONNAIRES USED. ANALYSIS OF EXISTING DEMAND, ITS FLUCTUATIONS, AND FORECASTS, THE INTERACTION BETWEEN TOWN PLANNING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT, AND WAYS OF SPREADING PEAKS RESULTING FROM COMMUTER TRAFFIC APPEAR INCREASINGLY CLAIMING THE ATTENTION OF MANAGEMENT. NUMEROUS ECONOMIC MODELS AND VARIOUS PROGRAMMING EFFORTS HAVE BEEN DEVOTED TO PLANNING AND THE CHOOSING INVESTMENTS. THE MAIN SUBJECTS OF THE SURVEYS CONDUCTED IN RECENT YEARS BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT WERE CONCERNED WITH STUDIES ON THE AUTOMATION OF TRAIN MOVEMENT, THE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF ROLLING STOCK, OPERATION OF A BUS ROUTE, AND DATA PROCESSING METHODS. THE FOLLOWING ANALYTICAL MODELS WERE USED IN STUDIES OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT: QUEUEING, STOCK PROBLEMS AND RELIABILITY, WEAR REORDERING USING THE STOCHASTIC PHENOMENA. THE TWO MAIN METHODS OF STUDYING STOCHASTIC PHENOMENA ARE: (1) ANALYTICAL MODELS, AND (2) HEURISTIC METHODS, IN PARTICULAR DIGITAL OR ANALOG SIMULATION. STOCHASTIC PHENOMENA ARE DEFINED AS THOSE PHENOMENA DEPENDENT ON CHANCE. CUMULATIVE PHENOMENA SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED ARE BOOLEAN ALGEBRA, THE THEORY OF GRAPHS, SEPARATION AND PROGRESSIVE EVALUATION, LINEAR PROGRAMMING AND DYNAMIC PROGRAMMING. THE THEORY OF GAMES HAS BEEN USED BY EMPLOYING SIMULTANEOUSLY A QUEUEING SIMULATION METHOD AND MATHEMATICAL GAMING TECHNIQUES. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THERE ARE SPHERES IN WHICH COMMON SENSE IS OF NO HELP FOR OPERATIONAL RESEARCH. THIS IS THE CASE IN THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS: (1) IN STOCHASTIC SITUATIONS WHERE ONLY THE CONCEPT OF MATHEMATICAL PROBABILITY GIVES A CLEAR PICTURE, AND (2) IN CUMULATIVE SITUATIONS IN WHICH THE VARIOUS METHODS OF THE THEORY OF GRAPHS, MATHEMATICAL ALGORITHMS AND CERTAIN HEURISTIC PROCEDURES ARE ALONE ABLE TO EXPLORE THE LABYRINTH CONCEALING THE RIGHT SOLUTION.
