TRAFFIC FORECAST

ESTIMATES ARE PRESENTED OF PATRONAGE AND REVENUE FOR THE TESTS OF ALTERNATIVE WASHINGTON REGION RAPID RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEMS. AN ANNUAL 1990 RIDERSHIP OF 281 MILLION IS ESTIMATED FOR THE PROPOSED REGIONAL RAIL SYSTEM WHICH HAS BEEN DESIGNATED. A PLANNING PROCEDURE INVOLVING INITIAL TESTING OF THREE ALTERNATIVE RAIL-BUS NETWORKS WAS ADOPTED. TESTING INCLUDING PATRONAGE AND REVENUE ESTIMATES, CAPITAL AND OPERATING COSTS ESTIMATES, FINANCIAL, SOCIAL AND LAND USE CONSIDERATIONS. THE TRAFFIC FORECASTING METHODS USED ARE OUTLINED. THE TECHNICAL PROCEDURES AND TRAVEL CONDITIONS USED IN THE 1990 ESTIMATION PROCESS ARE PRESENTED. FORECASTS ARE PRESENTED OF TRANSIT RIDERSHIP AND REVENUE FOR THE PROPOSED REGIONAL SYSTEM. A COMMENTARY IS GIVEN ON THE TRAFFIC ANALYSIS, INCLUDING A DESCRIPTION OF SIGNIFICANT ASSUMPTIONS AND SYSTEMS COMPARISONS PERTAINING TO PATRONAGE AND TRAFFIC SERVICE.
