TRANSIT VEHICLE TRUCK CONCEPTS

THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT (BART) RECEIVED FUNDS TO INVESTIGATE MANUFACTURING AND TESTING OF WIDE-GAUGE TRUCKS UNDER BART SERVICE CONDITIONS TO: (1) EVALUATE TRUCK CONCEPTS FROM THE STANDPOINT OF SAFETY, RIDE QUALITY, AND MAINTENANCE, AND (2) OBTAIN INFORMATION FOR USE IN PREPARING SPECIFICATIONS COVERING THE DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION AND SPRING SUSPENSION FOR BART SYSTEM TRUCKS. FIVE DIFFERENT TRUCKS WERE OBTAINED FROM REPRESENTATIVE TRUCK MANUFACTURERS, ALL CARRYING SENSING EQUIPMENT NECESSARY FOR THE OPERATION OF AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL AND POWER COLLECTORS FOR 1000 VDC OR 4160 VAC POWER SUPPLIES. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON THE DIABLO TEST TRACK PRIMARILY UNDER SINGLE-CAR, SELF-PROPELLED OPERATIONS, BUT WITH SOME MULTIPLE-UNIT OPERATION. THE TRUCK DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM INDICATED THAT THE NECESSARY SAFETY, COMFORT, AND ECONOMY ARE POTENTIALLY ATTAINABLE UNDER HIGH-SPEED OPERATING CONDITIONS ON WIDE-GAUGE TRACK. THE SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR BART SYSTEM TRUCKS WERE ESTABLISHED. /AUTHOR/
