SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS FOR URBAN FREEWAYS

THIS REPORT CONCERNING SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS FOR URBAN FREEWAYS HAS REVIEWED THE TOPICS OF SIZE AND SPACING, SYSTEM CONFIGURATION, EFFECT ON ARTERIALS, SERVICE AND INTERCHANGE CONSIDERATIONS, SYSTEM OPERATIONS, COMPATABILITY WITH MASS TRANSIT AND THE EFFECT ON URBAN DEVELOPMENT. HOPEFULLY, THE DAY IS PAST WHEN FREEWAY PLANNING IS LIMITED TO ROUTE PLANNING ONLY, PAYING LITTLE OR NO HEED TO THE EFFECT ON THE OVERALL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM OR ON URBAN DEVELOPMENT. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT FREEWAY SYSTEM PLANNING FORMS A MAJOR PART OF A COMPREHENSIVE URBAN LAND USE AND TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROCESS. THREE SPECIFIC POSSIBLE RESEARCH AREAS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED, AND THEY ARE CITED FOLLOWING A REVIEW OF THE DISCUSSION IN THIS REPORT. /AUTHOR/
