GUIDELINES FOR NEW SYSTEMS OF URBAN TRANSPORTATION - VOLUME 1: URBAN NEEDS AND POTENTIALS

A LITERATURE REVIEW WAS CONDUCTED TO DESIGN A FRAMEWORK FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES, METRO- POLITAN FORMS, AND CRITERIA FOR TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM SELECTION. EMPHASIS HAS BEEN PLACED ON IDENTIFYING ISSUES, PROBLEMS, AND REQUIREMENTS. WHILE THERE ARE NO SIMPLE ANSWERS TO THE COMPLEX PROBLEMS, THE NATIONAL LEVEL OF COMPREHENSIVE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IS AT PRESENT FAR BELOW WHAT IT COULD OR SHOULD BE. THIS FIRST OF THREE VOLUMES IDENTIFIES BASIC GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT; REVIEWS TRENDS AND PROBLEMS IN URBAN GROWTH; EXAMINES ALTERNATIVE PATTERNS OF METROPOLITAN DEVELOPMENT ON THE BASIS OF NINE METROPOLITAN PLANS; EVALUATES ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS AT REGIONAL, METROPOLITAN, LOCAL, AND CBD LEVELS; DISCUSSES PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES FOR ACHIEVING GREATER COORDINATION BETWEEN TRANSPORTATION AND LAND-USE PLANNING ACTIVITIES; AND RECOMMENDS FURTHER RESEARCH ON NEW URBAN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS.
