Towards the Initiation of Joint Research Priorities in the Area of Transport

Addressing Grand Challenges is one of the most pressing concerns of the Transport research community. This has resulted in the need of an analysis of the state of European Research Area (ERA) development within the transport domain, as well as the need of developing recommendations for the European Commission (EC), member states and other stakeholders. From these needs and requirements specified, the objectives of Developing a European Transport Research Alliance (DETRA) emerged, which is a 7th Framework project, whose concept derives from the so-called Lyon Declaration and concerns the deepening of the European Research Area objectives in transport in order to address the Grand Challenges. One of the most important outcomes of the DETRA project was the development of an optimised pan-European transport research work programme, which is a type of guide including research priorities, as far as the Surface Transport is concerned, as well as a proposal for Joint Research Initiatives (JRIs) in the Surface Transport domain.
