Creating a motorcyclists model for braking based on volunteer tests

From the LMU fatality database braking is a pre-crash manoeuvre performed in 40% of motorcycle accident, something that is also in accordance to the epidemiology studies from HURT and MAIDS. Sled-tests with a motorcycle mock-up were used to simulate the braking action of volunteers. Kinematics and muscle activity of the volunteers were captured using a motion capture system and an electromyography (EMG) device. The posture of the volunteers during the test was extracted from the motion capture data and the joint angles were calculated with inverse kinematics. The initial posture was defined as the volunteers’ posture right before the initiation of the sled motion and it was fairly consistent for the volunteers between each trial. The muscle activation onsets were calculated from the EMG signal. Data analysis was performed based on clustering of two kinematics parameters: head displacement and head angle. Two types of volunteer behaviour were identified from the clustering. The final aim of this study is to derive an active bio-fidelic pre-crash model of motorcyclists during braking. (A)
