A Statistical Approach to Dynamic Response of Pile Groups in Foundations for Vibratory Machinery

The paper considers robustness of dynamic response analysis of pile groups in foundations for vibratory machinery in case of stochastically and spatially varying soil elastic properties. In the dynamic case, the pile group response is highly and irregularly frequency-dependent. A new methodology of group stiffness definition is described, involving Monte Carlo simulation of the pile group response with different soil parameters from the given range; enveloping the resulting response curves and fitting them with a theoretical amplitude-frequency curve, which yields the real and imaginary part of pile group stiffness parameter. Through theoretical and numerical studies, it has been proven that the group stiffness thus defined eliminates anomalies occurring in conventional dynamic group stiffness analysis and is robust against soil properties variation, random non-uniformity of soil properties over the pile depth, and boundary effects at the periphery of the pile.
