A Pan-European Ecosystem for Intelligent Cargo and its Impact on Emission Reduction

The intention of this paper is to lay out and describe in detail a reference architecture for Intelligent Cargo as developed in the European Integrated Project iCargo, funded via the European Commission by its FP7 programme. Multiple research initiatives in the cargo logistics sector have created prototypes and proof-of-concepts during the recent decade for various subdomains of the concept of Intelligent Cargo, thus the decentralizing of intelligence on cargo level rather than using large-scale, single-company intelligent transportation (IT) set-ups. Nevertheless, a pan-European, holistic approach for Intelligent Cargo created by and for mayor companies has not been established yet. In this paper the authors describe the envisioned business goals based upon the developed five iCargo high-level, core business innovations, the used technical architecture to achieve these goals as well as how emission monitoring can be integrated into the key iCargo services.
