Rain and more rain: managing landslip risk on rail earthworks

This article focuses on challenges to managing landslip risk on railway earthworks as railway networks age and are subjected to dynamic weather events. The authors suggest that new technologies and a risk-based approach can help make the most of limited information and resources. The article lists a number of uncertainties associated with railway earthwork behavior that can lead to earthwork failure in unexpected places, and strategies for assessing likelihood of earthwork failure are presented. Changes in weather patterns and impact on infrastructure necessitates both reactive and proactive measures to be implemented to ensure a railway earthworks that is fit for purpose.
