DETERMINATION OF HISTORICAL FLOOD FREQUENCY FOR THE ROOT RIVER OF WISCONSIN

THE SEWRPC REGIONAL LAND USE-TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROGRAM AND THE WATERSHED PLANNING PROGRAM ARE CLOSELY RELATED IN ORDER TO PLAN DRAINAGE AND FLOOD CONTROL, WATER QUALITY AND STREAM POLLUTION, SEWERAGE AND WATER SUPPLY, RECREATION AND PUBLIC OPEN-SPACE RESERVATION, AND CHANGING LAND USE. A SEVERE FLOOD WHICH OCCURRED IN THE SPRING OF 1960 ON THE ROOT RIVER CREATED THE NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS RIVER, HOWEVER THE SPRING STREET GAGE RECORDS ONLY DATE BACK TO 1940. SEVERAL METHODS OF PROBABILITY ANALYSIS INCLUDING THE HAZEN FORMULA ARE USED IN THIS STUDY OF THE DISCHARGE FREQUENCY PROJECTIONS FOR THE ROOT RIVER. FREQUENCY RELATIONSHIPS WERE PREPARED USING THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TECHNIQUE. REFERENCES' FLOODS IN WISCONSIN - MAGNITUDE AND FREQUENCY, U. S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY REPORT.
