Towering Challenges

Freight and commuter railroads are struggling to meet the December 2015 deadline for implementing positive train control (PTC). The goal is to build an nationwide safety system for crash prevention. The technology is still evolving, and regulatory issues have been causing difficulty for PTC systems. The biggest issue is that the Federal Communications Commission has ordered the installation of necessary signaling antennae to stop. Many in the industry have said that the 2015 deadline is unrealistic, though they are doing what they can to ready their systems in time. The possibility of a deadline extension remains uncertain.
