SUBURBAN LAND USE SURVEY MANUAL

THE LAND USE SURVEY IS AN INTERGRAL PART OF THE OVER-ALL STUDY DESIGN OF THE CHICAGO AREA TRANSPORTATION STUDY. THIS SURVEY COVERS THE ENTIRE CATS AREA OF APPROXIMATELY 1250 SQUARE MILES, PLUS 150 SQUARE MILES IN LAKE COUNTY, INDIANA. TRIPS WILL BE RELATED TO LAND USE IN ORDER TO COMPUTE RATES OF TRIP GENERATION WITHIN ANALYSIS ZONES. RATES MAY BE STRATIFIED BY LAND USE TYPE, MODE OF TRAVEL, TIME OF DAY, ETC. WHEN THE TRIP GENERATION RATES OF VARIOUS LAND USES ARE ESTABLISHED, THESE RATES WILL BE RELATED TO ESTIMATES OF FUTURE TRANSPORTATION OR LAND USE IN ORDER TO FORECAST FUTURE TRIP VOLUME AND DISTRIBUTION. AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE ELECTRIC METER CARDS OF THE PUBLIC SERVICE DIVISION OF THE COMMONWEALTH EDISON COMPANY WERE THE PRIMARY SOURCES OF LAND USE INFORMATION IN THE SUBURBS. SANBORN INSURANCE MAPS, UNITED STATES GEOLOGIC SURVEYS MAPS AND ZONING MAPS WERE USED TO SUPPLEMENT THESE TWO MAJOR SOURCES. METHODOLOGY OF THE SURVEY IS DESCRIBED, INCLUDING DETAILED ACCOUNTS OF THE PROCEDURES EMPLOYED TO IDENTIFY AND MEASURE GENERALIZED LAND USE IN THE SUBURBS.
