SELECTED RELATIONSHIPS OF LAND USE AND DISTANCE FROM CITY CENTER

A STUDY WAS MADE OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF LAND USES IN TERMS OF DISTANCE FROM THE CHICAGO CBD BY CATS. THREE ASPECTS OF THE SUBJECT OF LAND USE AND DISTANCE FROM THE CITY ARE PRESENTED' /1/ THE PROPORTION OF LAND DEVELOPED OR IN USE BY DISTANCE FROM THE CBD, /2/ LAND USE PROPORTIONS OR LAND USE MIXES BY DISTANCE FROM THE CBD, AND /3/ THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE AREA IN LAND USES BY ONE MILE DISTANCE RINGS. CONCLUSIONS ARE' /1/ IT IS REASONABLE TO EXPECT A SMALL PROPORTION OF THE LAND TO REMAIN VACANT, /2/ THE DECLINE IN PERCENTAGE OF LAND USE IS REGULAR ONCE THE END OF THE HIGHLY BUILT-UP AREA IS REACHED AT ABOUT THE NINE MILE DISTANCE RING, /3/ THERE IS A REASONABLE AND RATHER ORDERLY CONSISTENCY OF LAND USE PROPORTIONS OVER DISTANCE, AND /4/ COMMERCIAL AND MANUFACTURING USE ARE MOST CONCENTRATED NEAR THE CENTER, FOLLOWED BY TRANSPORTATION, RESIDENTIAL AND STREETS, AND, FINALLY, PUBLIC, TOTAL, AND VACANT LANDS.
