Research on Multiple-Mode Freight Transport Flow Assignment Optimization with Consideration of Carbon Emissions Cost

Transportation is a major source of carbon emissions and an effective method to decrease the unit shipment emission of carbon dioxide (CO₂). Based on the analysis of the combined freight transport network - which consists of highways, waterways, and railways - an optimization model is presented with consideration of the environmental costs of CO₂ emissions and transit cost during the transferring. The Frank-Wolf algorithm is used to solve the above freight transportation assignment optimization model. With the increase in weight of the environmental cost, the numerical examples show that freight transportation flow would be switched from the transport mode with higher carbon emission intensity to the one with less. Therefore, when making transport policy, different carbon taxes can be implemented for different modes of transport in the development of green transportation.
