Research on the Impact of Flashing Green Lights on E-Bike Drivers' Behavior

With the dramatic increase of the number of electric bicycles (hereinafter referred to as e-bikes), its safety receives more and more attention. One of the main clinical manifestations is red light violation resulting from a wrong stop & go decision during a signal change interval. Which have important effects on e-bikes during the yellow light decision-making process? How much is the impact of a flashing green light to e-bikes' decision-making process? In order to solve these problems, this research sets up the stop & pass decision model and discusses the impact of a flashing green light to the decision process. Analysis results show that the potential time is a critical factor for the decision-making process and a flashing green light can lead to earlier decisions. The flashing green light can provide more time for e-bikes to accelerate through the intersections, but evokes more aggressive behaviors though, obviously, it can reduce the option area.
