Method Based on RSSI for Preventing Train Collision

To guarantee the safety of train operations, a method based on received signal strength indicator (RSSI) for preventing train collisions is proposed in this paper. The main hardware is train on-board readers installed at both ends of the train. The reader of the following train receives the signal transmitted ceaselessly by the front one. Utilizing the loss of signal power is a reliable way of measuring the distance by the propagation loss model of radio waves in the free space. To reduce the fluctuation negative effects of ranging, a correction algorithm is proposed to calculate the distance between two successive trains. When the measured distance is under the minimum threshold value, alarms will be given to prevent collisions. Experiments were conducted to verify the correction method. The result shows that the error rate decreases and the accuracy is improved.
