Collaborative Mechanisms in High-Speed Rail Hub Design in China: Opportunities and Challenges

With the rapid expansion of the High-Speed Rail (HSR) network in China and endorsement of the Transit-First policies from the government. China now witnesses the booming of multimodal transit facilities. On the other hand, architects are lacking in real-world experience of handling "mass transit-oriented" facilities involving complex vehicular/pedestrian movements and an effective "way-finding" system. Typical opportunities and challenges facing project management teams and stakeholders are summarized in this paper. Stakeholder-oriented collaborative mechanisms are proposed which focus on communication and mutual understanding. Examples are given to demonstrate how such a mechanism is utilized in transportation analysis of the HSR design. Suggestions are proposed for an HSR project management team - as well as stakeholders - to further enhance the collaboration and how to adapt international experiences to local conditions and characteristics. Through an integrated design process, both the technical and management skills of the multi-disciplinary team are brought up to a new level.
