A TDVRP Model for Financial Convoy Service in China

In China, specialized financial convoy companies are responsible for convoy currency for all bank branches in their cities. This paper treats financial convoy problems as Time-Dependent Vehicle Routing Problem (TDVRP) since it has some extraordinary characteristics that need to be taken into account: (1) very tight time window; and (2) urban road traffic conditions during peak hours in the morning and afternoon. The objective function is to minimize total cost. Firstly, the authors propose a modified evolutionary strategy, then prove its effectiveness on Solomon's benchmark of static Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW), and apply it to the TDVRP model with certain modifications. The authors also provide results of situations in which we only consider the time-dependent travel time of secondary roads (for example, arterial roads). In the end, the authors conduct a case study on V Company's financial convoy service in the Nanshan District of Shenzhen, China. The results show that our migration operator, together with evolutionary strategy, is effective in handling these problems.
