Research on the Fast Handover Process of Vehicle to Infrastructure System Based on IEEE 802.11p

In recent years, the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication system has attracted much more attention, as it can improve traffic safety and efficiency. The research of handover technology of wireless access in the vehicular environment based on IEEE 802.11p is one of the key technologies of the V2I communication system. It plays an important role in improving highway traffic efficiency and reducing road accidents. However, because of long transmission delay and high packet loss rate, original handover technology is not suitable for the V2I communication consisting of fast-moving vehicles in a highway environment. A new fast handover process has been proposed for the special requirements of V2I wireless communication in a highway environment. Verilog hardware description language (HDL) language has been used to develop each receiving module, decision module, and sending module in the fast handover process and has been downloaded to the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware for testing.
