Analysis on Road Capacity for Mixed Manual/Automated Traffic

An automated vehicle is capable of maintaining a constant distance with the preceding vehicle as long as these two vehicles are in the same lane. On the contrary, for manual vehicles, the spacing of adjacent vehicles cannot be kept as a constant due to drivers' inaccuracy in perceptions and reactions. So, the authors expect the introduction of automated vehicles will increase the capacity of traffic flow. In this paper, the authors first study the spacing distributions of manual traffic and mixed manual/automated traffic. Then, based on the link between spacing distributions and fundamental diagrams, the authors show that the traffic flow rate will increase in mixed traffic, as compared to pure manual traffic. The sensitivity of the capacity with respect to the percent of automated vehicles is also investigated.
