From Traffic Signal Control Systems to Automated Driving, a Review of ITS Systems Based on a Cross Historical and Technical Perspective

The paper analyses some aspects related to traffic control systems, information and guidance, driver assistance and automation. Based on a cooperation between an engineer and a historian, both involved in a think-tank related to transportation systems and their evolution, the analysis tries to identify some improvements over a large period before 2013. The paper attempts to describe different periods, each one related to a class of systems. The objective of this is to gives a clear, structured picture of how and when things have evolved. The paper also looks at some aspects of what can be expected in the future.
