TUNNEL COLLAPSE AND EARTH PRESSURE THEORY

Phenomena of tunnel failure and their causes are analyzed. Theories on the generation of earth pressure inducing tunnel failure are reviewed to present the concept of "collapsible earth layer." Also presented are a few comments on the surveys of collapsible earth layer and some guidelines for the bedrock strength liable to develop the earth pressure phenomena which cause troubles in tunnel construction.
