SURE, YOU LIKE RAILROADS--BUT WOULD YOU PUT MONEY IN THEM?
At the outset, the question might well be asked why any railroad securities should be purchased today in the face of harsh, unrealistic control policies based upon a transportation monopoly which no longer exists; in the face of onerous labor rules and restrictions, in the face of the industry's inability to abandon without considerable delay loss producing branch lines (some 65,000 miles of marginal lines should be scrapped); in the face of Government subsidies to barge lines and truckers and in the face of the critical Eastern railroad problems with all the major Eastern carriers either bankrupt or facing bankruptcy. Today, in the face of the ills besetting the industry, opportunities do exist--especially in the securities of Western carriers, which are benefiting from exploitation of their natural resources: coal, lumber, real estate, and miscellaneous minerals.
