New Logistics Concept for Urban Courier Services

One of the concepts for optimization of urban shipment and delivery developed within European Union (EU) research project “CityLog” is a new pick up and delivery scenario for courier services. It allows for both substitution of cars by bikes in the centre even with very long routes and for bundling of shipments. This is achieved by splitting the routes: Long distances outside the city are driven by car as before, bikes operate inside the centre. Link between the routes is a novel consolidation storage. This concept was applied within a two-month field test in Berlin. Evaluation focussed on the domains traffic, environment, commercial economy, social economy as well as safety and usability. The outcomes were also extrapolated to usage within the whole city centre instead of application only in a small test area. Positive results were achieved within all five target domains. During the whole test period no customer complaints emerged. Additionally, important information for the updated larger scale implementation of the concept was identified, which is currently in progress in Berlin.
