India's Grand Tunnel Vision

A multi-million dollar upgrade to National Highway 1A, which is a single lane, narrow and winding road that crosses some of the steepest and treacherous terrain on the globe, in northern India is described in this article. The highway will be upgraded to four lanes and several tunnels will be constructed that will reduce travel time between Srinager and Jammu to five hours. The challenges associated with tunneling in the Himalayas are presented in the article. The objective of the upgrade is to transform India's road system to connect the isolated northern state of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the highly populated country.
