Safe and Secure Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Intelligent transport systems (ITS) are transport systems where information and communication technologies (ICT) have been applied to achieve more safe, secure, effective and environmental friendly transport of persons and goods. It is a paradox that the ITS applications may cause the transport systems to become less safe and secure, e.g. when there is a lack of information or communication quality or required information is not available due to system failures or attacks from hackers or activists. This paper looks upon the challenges in three different areas: privacy, information and communication technologies (ICT) security and stakeholder awareness of safety and security challenges in ITS. The main challenge concerning privacy is the information collected, handled and stored on user and vehicle movements. The main challenges concerning ICT are related to availability, integrity, authenticity, confidentiality and accountability. Stakeholder awareness seems to be present for privacy due to a general public awareness and media focus not for transport only but also for other sectors, e.g. health.
