Heading Towards the Next Level of Supply Chain Security

The implementation of security measures at first sight increases the transport costs. But the implementation of some measures like improving the supply chain visibility could lead to a win-win situation and produce tangible benefits for businesses. An improved supply chain visibility will on the one hand enhance the security of the chain but on the other hand could also lead to a better assessment of business risks and improve the supply chain performance. This paper describes the research on this win-win situation – improving security through visibility in the field of global containerized supply chains. The paper presents results of a literature review on security regulations and measures. Different types of risks are described and the possibility to mitigate these risks by better data quality is assessed. It is concluded that different types of risks can be reduced by improved supply chain visibility which is achieved by usage of better quality data.
