Applying and Testing a New Generation Traffic Management with Multiobjectives

Policy makers face within urban areas difficult challenges with respect to increasing traffic and increasing congestion, related air quality problems and noise pollution on street level. This paper provides an innovative solution to tackle the above challenge on multi-objective traffic management and describes the differences in decision making on a traffic management level when the different policy goals are taken into account. The considerations between the different policy goals can be put into a multi-criteria instrument and algorithm to allow for a flexible while consistent means of managing traffic within urban areas. The paper shows two case applications in the cities of The Hague and Helmond into which extent the potential that multi-criteria traffic management can offer is true. The key performance indices are also computed to showcase the benefit and potential of the new generation traffic management. The combination of the case applications together with different possibilities to realize multi-criteria traffic management will show the flexibility of the new generation traffic management. It also indicates that the steps are location specific to be able to solve the local problems.
