Bus BiW Weight Optimization Using Composite Sandwich Panels

The paper presents work done in the framework of the European project HCV- Hybrid Commercial Vehicle (Grant Agreement No 234019) aiming to reduce the mass of the vehicle. The rear of a hybrid bus was redesigned in a joint effort by Volvo and IDMEC, replacing most of the metallic frame and other components, including panels with composite a sandwich module. Other parts of the structure were also redesigned by Volvo, using metal and foam based sandwich structures and other materials, although this particular part of the work is not addressed in this paper. The redesigned prototype bus is at the final stage of production. Its structure is completely finished and a first trial run of approximately 10km was made. Although this run was not intended for structural testing or assessment purposes, no problems were detected. The overall weight reduction was approximately 900kg, 80% above the initial objective of the project. This reduction was confirmed by weighting the prototype.
