A PARKS APPRAISAL...REGIONAL FACILITIES

SOME DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO THE PROBLEMS OF EVALUATING PARK SYSTEMS ARE: (1) PROPOSING THREE STANDARDS FOR JUDGING SUCCESS ON THE BASIS OF LOCAL RESIDENT RESPONSE, (2) SUMMARIZING EVALUATIVE DATA OBTAINED FOR RESIDENCE IN THE VICINITY OF 13 CITY PARKS, AND (3) SHOWING HOW DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF THE POPULATION DIFFER IN THE RESPONSES TO PARKS OF THE SAME CLASSIFICATION. INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE: KNOWLEDGE OF THE NEAREST PARK, REPORTED EFFECTS OF PARKS, AND FACTORS AFFECTING THE USE OF PARKS. STATISTICAL MODELS CAPABLE OF PREDICTING ATTENDANCE AT REGIONAL FACILITIES WERE DEVELOPED USING MULTIPLE CORRELATION, TIME SERIES, AND REGRESSION ANALYSIS IN A CROSS SECTIONAL ANALYSIS OF PARK FACILITIES. THE USE OF MUSEUMS AND ZOOS IN THE REGION WERE EVALUATED IN TERMS OF USE, DISTANCE, LOCATION, TRANSPORTATION, PUBLICITY, AND FREQUENCY OF VISITS.
