Advanced Lightweight Design for Electric Vehicles - ALIVE

The European Commission funded EU-Project ALIVE, has 23 partners which have the mutual goal to develop material and design concepts to significantly reduce the weight of electric vehicles by 20% based on state-of-the-art vehicle technology. The ALIVE project is divided into five main work packages: 1) vehicle design, 2) simulation, 3) materials and manufacturing technologies, 4) testing and validation and 5) build-up of modules and assembly of demonstrators. These work packages are accompanied by a life-cycle-analysis and several dissemination, extrapolation and management activities. This paper describes the developments in designing the structure of a weight-optimized electric vehicle including Body-in-white, chassis, heavy interior and closures and the covered functional integration, e.g. integration of the battery housing into floor structure as well as modular battery concepts. In addition, latest material developments and multi-material concepts are discussed. Finally, conclusions and perspectives describe future activities of the project.
