CLEVELAND HEIGHTS AND THE LEE FREEWAY: A STUDY OF COLLECTIVE OPINION AND KNOWLEDGE IN RELATION TO CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULACE

STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE HOW WELL THE RESIDENTS OF CLEVELAND HEIGHTS WERE ACQUAINTED WITH THE PLANS OF THE PROPOSED LEE FREEWAY AND TO INVESTIGATE PUBLIC OPINION CONCERNING THE FREEWAY. DETERMINATION OF THE ESTIMATED ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE FREEWAY WAS ANOTHER OBJECTIVE. THE SURVEY INTERVIEWED 255 RESIDENTS AND 50 PROFESSIONALS REGARDING THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND OPINIONS OF THE PROPOSED LEE FREEWAY. KNOWLEDGE AND OPINION OF THOSE INTERVIEWED WERE DETERMINED AND COMPARED WITH DISTANCE FROM THE PROPOSED FREEWAY ROUTE, LENGTH OF RESIDENCE, AND NUMBER OF CHILDREN LIVING AT HOME. A LIST OF ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES WAS ALSO COMPILED FROM EACH INTERVIEW. ON THE BASIS OF THIS DATA, OPPOSITION TO THE LEE FREEWAY WAS FOUND TO BE INVERSELY RELATED TO THE DISTANCE FROM THE FREEWAY. STRENGTH OF OPINION AND KNOWLEDGE CONCERNING THE PROPOSED FREEWAY WERE DIRECTLY RELATED, WHILE KNOWLEDGE WAS INVERSELY RELATED TO DISTANCE. CONCERN FOR POSSIBLE PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF THE PROPOSED FREEWAY WAS FOUND TO BE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE. NO CONCLUSION WAS DRAWN REGARDING BENEFITS.
