Sustainable Transportation in the National Parks: From Acadia to Zion

Twenty-one essays that investigate the various relationships between national parks and transportation comprise this volume. The two subjects are closely entwined, and there is a need for a specific management approach that takes into account how the quality of the visitor experience is affected by transportation and that can also make the most of the ways in which the sustainability of parks and outdoor recreation can benefit from transportation. Chapter headings are as follows: 1) Transportation in the National Parks - an Introduction; 2) Transportation and Recreation - Environment and Experience; 3) Transportation as a Management Tool - Capacity, Modeling, Mode Choice; and 4) Transportation in the National Parks - Case Studies. A synthesis of the essays into a series of principles that can be used to help guide sustainable transportation in the national parks is presented in the final chapter.
