ITS takes on the cycle safety challenge

A 2013 report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Cycling, Health and Safety, found that cyclists are often unaccounted for in the design of the road system. Statistics from around the world show that there are high road fatalities for cyclists. The OECD says bicycle usage can be increased without an increase in fatalities if cycling is a consideration in road design and cycling safety measures are increased. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can be implemented to improve cycling safety, with systems using video detection, traffic sensors, radio frequency identification, and Mobile Visual Information Systems, among others.
