Brazil opts for free-flow tolling

In 2013, Brazil’s first multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) tolling system opened in São Paulo. This began a new phase for the deployment of electronic fee collection (EFC) systems across the country. Toll programs at both federal and state levels began awarding contracts to private companies. A National System for Automatic Vehicle Identification has been established, using a single passive chip for electronic registration of road vehicles. In addition to its use in toll collection, the chip can be used to identify stolen vehicles. There has been no work on cross-border interoperability in South America, but toll systems are growing and developing across Brazil.
