Gothenburg goes for single gantry

A congestion charge was introduced in Gothenburg, Sweden as part of a long-term plan to improve transportation and sustainability in West Sweden. Gothenburg will also be getting new train tracks and bus lanes. The congestion charge will help fund these projects. When planning for the congestion charge took place, city authorities wanted to minimize the cost of infrastructure, so a single gantry multilane free flow design was developed. A single gantry station does not need a great deal of space. The system is highly accurate, which has helped public acceptance. Traffic levels have gone down since the congestion charge was introduced, and drivers are only charged during peak hours.
