'Old' technology cuts rear-end shunts

There have been high levels of highway traffic crashes involving heavy trucks near minor road maintenance sites in many parts of Germany, including Bavaria. German federal road safety guidelines include regulations concerning visual warnings, but trucks often fail to break in time, leading to rear-end collisions with maintenance vehicles. The Motorway Directorate for Northern Bavaria has researched possible solutions. Visual solutions are ineffective alone, as shown by the failure of the visual warnings in use. An auditory solution has been developed, using an intelligent alarm system, using Citizen Band (CB) radios. Approximately 75% of trucks in Germany are equipped with CB radios, and 95% of equipped drivers are constantly listening in. CB radios may be an older technology, but this scheme has been shown to improve safety.
