Making the switch

Until recently, the standard method for coordinating signalized intersections was with an on-street master installed in local areas. Each monitored a limited number of signal controllers in a closed loop system, and each closed loop system was autonomous from the others. The use of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have improved these systems, allowing for real-time monitoring. ITS technology can provide active traffic management with the use of an Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS). The ATMS can control signals over a wide geographic area, which improves timing and traffic. There are very many on-street closed loop systems still in use that will eventually transition to a central ATMS.
