Infrastructure-free travel time measurement

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) often do not need roadside infrastructure for data collection. A new technology has been developed to monitor the movement of mobile phones anonymously when the phones are communicating with the network. It does not require the roadside deployment of systems that use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi sensors to detect vehicles. Cellular network providers have transmitters and receivers in towns and cities, as well as along transportation routes. This technology maps the cellular network on the road. This system costs less than systems that require the installation of roadside infrastructure. A validation project is ongoing in British Columbia, and results match those collected by sensors.
