In order to collect quality data for its Long-Term Bridge Performance (LTBP) program, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Rutgers University are rolling out a bridge-deck assessing robot. Combining a wide array of current technologies into one platform, the robot represents the future of bridge-deck inspection. The process leading up to the robot's implementation is described here, as well as a detailed description of how the robot (known as the RABIT Bridge Deck Assessment Tool) works. A number of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies are used to provide a comprehensive diagnostic of a bridge deck in just one pass; these include the following: ultrasonic surface wave (USW) testing; impact echo (IE); ground-penetrating radar (GPR); and electrical resistivity.
