Traffic Calming and RRFBs Increase Pedestrian Safety in Lethbridge, Canada

This article describes a project in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, that has combined traffic calming and pedestrian safety to make access to the Botteril Bottom Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America, safer for local residents using the trails. The authors detail the selection of the application site and the use of Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFB) to alert motorists to the pedestrian crossing area. They report on the success of the system, which has city personnel reporting results that support previous evidence on the effectiveness of RRFB indications.
