Navigating toward zero fatalities: the role of NCAPS

The research community is good at figuring out which vehicle features can reduce fatalities and injuries, and New Car Assessment Programs (NCAPs), including the IIHS vehicle ratings program, have encouraged manufacturers to adopt these features. Government regulation has, in some cases, sped things along even further. But even when a feature is mandatory in new vehicles, it still takes decades before all vehicles on the road are equipped with it. A study by our affiliate, the Highway Loss Data Institute, found that it takes about three decades or longer from the time a promising safety feature is introduced until it is on 95 percent of registered vehicles.
